YOUR FIRST VISIT
Visit ISWM
You do not have to be Muslim to feel welcome here. Whether you are curious about Islam, visiting with a friend, or hoping to meet your neighbors, we look forward to welcoming you to the Islamic Society of Western Massachusetts.
COME AS A NEIGHBOR
A Warm Welcome
A mosque, also called a masjid, is a place where Muslims gather to pray, learn, and connect. We welcome respectful visitors of all faiths and backgrounds who would like to learn more about Islam and our community.
You do not need any prior knowledge of Islam, and you are welcome to ask questions. Visiting does not require you to take part in prayer or any religious practice.
LET US HELP YOU PLAN
Before Your First Visit
Please contact us ahead of time if you would like an introduction to the mosque, are bringing a school or community group, or need help choosing a suitable visiting time.
Let us know about any accessibility needs or questions so we can discuss arrangements with you.
FEEL COMFORTABLE FROM THE START
A Simple Guide to Mosque Etiquette
A few thoughtful habits help everyone enjoy a peaceful visit. You do not need to know every custom—if you are unsure, simply ask your host.
01 · WHAT TO WEAR
Dress Comfortably & Modestly
Choose loose-fitting clothing that covers your shoulders and legs. If you have questions about clothing or head coverings in the prayer space, ask us before your visit.
02 · ENTERING THE PRAYER SPACE
Remove Your Shoes
Please remove your shoes before stepping onto carpeted prayer areas and use the designated shoe storage. Socks are welcome. If this is difficult for you, ask your host for assistance.
03 · DURING PRAYER
Observe Quietly
You are welcome to observe without joining the prayer. Silence your phone, keep conversations quiet, and follow your host’s guidance on where to sit or stand. Avoid walking directly in front of someone who is praying.
04 · MEETING PEOPLE
Let Greetings Feel Natural
A smile and a friendly hello are always a good start. Some Muslims prefer not to shake hands with someone of another gender. Let the other person take the lead; a warm verbal greeting is perfectly fine.
05 · PHOTOGRAPHS & PRIVACY
Ask Before Taking Photos
Please ask before photographing or recording inside the mosque, especially during prayer. Get permission from anyone who would appear in your photo and respect requests for privacy.
06 · VISITING AS A FAMILY
Help Care for Shared Spaces
Keep children close and help them move quietly around people who are praying. Enjoy food and drinks only in designated areas, and help leave the spaces you use clean and welcoming.
Questions are welcome. You are not expected to know everything on your first visit. Ask your host if you need help finding your way, understanding the prayer, or learning more about Islam.
